Milk

Safe in Moderation

Most dogs can tolerate a small amount of milk, but many have difficulty digesting lactose, so too much can cause digestive upset.

  • Lactose

Safe part

Small amounts of plain milk.

Avoid

Large amounts or milk-based products containing chocolate, xylitol or other ingredients that are unsafe for dogs.

Preparation

Plain milk only. Avoid flavored or sweetened milk products.

Serving guidance

Small amounts occasionally. Milk should not be used as a regular source of nutrition or hydration.

Nutritional note

Milk provides calories, fat and lactose but is not necessary for a dog's diet.

Did your dog already eat some?

A small amount of plain milk is generally not concerning. A larger amount may cause temporary digestive upset, particularly in dogs that are lactose intolerant.

Why we say this

Dogs do not need milk as part of a balanced diet, and many dogs produce less lactase after weaning. As a result, larger amounts of milk can cause diarrhea, gas, bloating or other gastrointestinal upset.
