Potato

Use Caution

Plain, fully cooked potato can generally be given in moderation, but raw or green potatoes and potato plant material are different.

  • Potentially Toxic
  • Preparation Matters

Safe part

Plain, fully cooked potato flesh.

Avoid

Raw or green potato, sprouts and potato plant material.

Preparation

Cook thoroughly and serve plain. Avoid butter, salt, frying and rich sauces.

Serving guidance

Small amounts as an occasional food.

Nutritional note

Potatoes are carbohydrate-rich and should not displace a complete and balanced diet.

Did your dog already eat some?

A small amount of plain cooked potato is generally low concern. Significant ingestion of green/raw potato, sprouts or plant material warrants veterinary guidance.

Why we say this

Cooking changes the safety profile of potato. Green or sprouted potatoes and plant material contain higher concentrations of glycoalkaloids such as solanine and should not be treated like plain cooked potato.
