Use Caution
Walnuts are not an ideal treat for dogs because of their high fat content, potential mold-related toxins and physical hazards.

Safe part
If given at all, only a very small amount of fresh, plain, unsalted walnut meat.
Avoid
Moldy or spoiled walnuts, black walnuts, shells, large quantities and seasoned or chocolate-coated walnuts.
Preparation
Do not intentionally feed moldy or spoiled nuts. Remove shells completely and avoid nuts of uncertain origin or condition.
Serving guidance
Best avoided or limited to very small, occasional amounts.
Nutritional note
Walnuts are high in fat and calories and offer little reason to include them as a regular dog treat.

A small amount of fresh walnut meat is generally less concerning than moldy walnuts or large quantities. If moldy walnuts were eaten or neurological signs develop, veterinary guidance is warranted.
Why we say this
Walnuts can be high in fat, and moldy walnuts can contain tremorgenic mycotoxins that may cause neurological signs. Whole nuts and shells can also create choking or obstruction concerns.
